MSX Games From Japan (Spelunker, Ultima IV, Bubble Bobble & Konami's Baseball)
It's been a while since I have been able to say "MSX Games from Japan" but I managed to find a title I had been after for a while, and a couple of others came along for the ride. Let's check them out together.

A very interesting "Do it yourself" project was posted on the Atariage forum in the Colecovision section, by user aotta, which supplies information on making a flash multi-cart using a clone of the Raspberry Pi PICO, a simple circuit board and one diode. The parts cost is around $11 total, so anyone who can solder should be able to undertake this project. I thought I would do a video showing my...

PSA: Console Moo website has both physical and download versions available! :)
Spelunker and bubble bobble look great, Ultima even for just that cloth map was worth it!
The Ultima box and contents are absolute mint (and it was the cheapest item!). Three other games are all very playable games, been after Spelunker for ages.
Great port of Bubble Bobble! I'd rank it higher than the NES version, but lower than the Master System version, which I think is the only port developed in-house by Taito itself.
This one was developed by Taito in house as well I believe. Taito didn’t have a huge number of titles for MSX, unlike most of the other Japanese developers. And they are not all good conversions, but this one definitely is.
Thanks for actually booting each one up and sharing it
Thanks, I like to give every game a quick try (as long as I can get them load of course)
You picked up some quite good games 😸 Bubble Bobble is almost arcade perfect (imho) and the package of Ultima IV is ❤ Say hi to your overlord cat for me!
Bubble Bobble has to one of the very best arcade conversions on MSX 2 and such a fun game too. That Ultima box and contents are pretty much mint. The cat overlord approves of your communication ;)
Spelunker looks good but very difficult compared to modern games. I think it would be better if the ghost wasn't even in it.
It does add a lot of pressure on the player, they definitely made games harder back in the day.
Cats are like women, they ignore you for days and then suddenly out of nowhere they come to you, sometimes in a most unexpected moment for some tenderness. We men are more like dogs always ready to give affection. You need to work on your japanese by the way 😂. More seriously great video once more, thanks a lot 🤙🤙
I live to serve my cat overlords :) I’m not sure my brain has enough space left to learn Kanji but you never know one day! I really enjoyed all of these games (but seriously need a translation patch for Ultima IV)
Cats, they go where they want, and they do they want, I know how you feel.
We live to serve our cat overlords :)
Used to love playing Bubble Bobble on the Amiga back in the day. Classic. 6:51 Your cat makes me laugh. :D Good stuff. :)
Bubble Bobble on MSX 2 is absolutely fantastic good showcase of the platform. He is my buddy (and overlord of course :))
Where did you get these from?
8-Bit Milli Games, his website is called console moo.
Great machine!
It is a curious and interesting machine. I have just finished working on the AV mod, so another video coming up soon.
be good to see the 6128 up and running
Finally have a weekend at home so hoping to get it going and record some more video.
its ok you can open the seals and enjoy the reading :)
Mmm I’ll read the open ones first but cool!
that 50 years of text adventure games book must be one hell of a read look at the size of it :)
Now that one sounds really interesting probably top of the list to have a look at.
the Microzeit publishers sent a lot of postcards etc with their books always good to have :)
Some very nice art.
:) nice vid
:) thank you for sending the items to me lots of interesting stuff to have a look through.
Very refreshing to see you wearing rather warm clothes... here in Barcelona it's around 35°C and with my family we spend most of the time under the trees or in the swimming pool in the garden 😎. There were some very interesting books for sure in these boxes. What a pity the first Amstrad 464 was already outdated when launched with no hardware sprites... but there are some hardcore Amstrad fanatics specially in France and the UK. Great video thanks! 🤙
Yes it has definitely been a bit chilly, only a couple more weeks and we will be in spring so it should start to warm up a bit. I am looking forward to seeing if the Amstrad still works and have a play with it.
I love boxes full of surprises. Cheers
There were quite a few surprising items in there in the end. Looking forward to checking out the computer.
The Knight Rider game for the NES, was not that good.
I haven’t actually ever played that one.
@@electricadventures I played it using an emulator, and it was not that fun it was released by Ocean Software.
Both pretty cool games I reckon - thanks for the demos.
Yes both quite different, but each have their own appeal and show off the systems capabilities quite well.
How much did it cost to get your first book published?
My first two books I published myself using Amazon, you basically just get paid a margin per copy sold (digital or physical). I had to do everything myself of course. My latest book I worked with the publisher Manning, I had a copy editor throughout the writing of the book, then access to a group of peer reviewers, another team that put the online version together, then another team who worked on the print copy. They paid me an advance, and you get more royalties once the book sales have paid off the advance. Working with the Manning team has allowed me to put together a much more professional and validated book this time, so I would happily publish with them in the future.
@@electricadventures Thanks, cheers mate.
The shoot' em up is very impressive and Virix has incredibly good graphics I didn't know the Coleco was capable of. Thanks for posting 🤙
He still managed Virix in the base Coleco 1k too which is quite well done.
Neat. Thanks
Thanks for watching.
That thing is awesome! I love the tape stop sound when the loading failed, it was very fitting, and the struggle to type CRUN again... It was worth it for the last program, lot of character definition work there.
It is quite a unique system I am going to play with it some more soon.
Fantastic tutorial. I ordered all the parts soldered it all together. It connects to the PC just fine and I am able to transfer the firmware and roms. But when I put it in my colecovision, I just get the "power off and insert cartridge" screen. I tried flashing all the other firmware and tried it on two different consoles, but no dice. do you know what could be wrong? Thanks!
I did find it very difficult to get it to work the first time as well as the solder pads on the PCB were very small. Reflow all of the connectors again and see. The fact that you can hook the Pi up to the PC means the Pi is still working.
@@electricadventures Thanks, will do. What's odd is that if I put it in the coleco, the Led turns on. But it won't load. Then while the coleco is on, if I plug it into my pc USB port, it loads right up and plays fine as long as it's connected to USB. Strange.
@@electricadventures you hit it on the head. I reflowed everything and now they work fine. Thanks for your help!
Congratulations Tony excellent achievement
Thank you, it’s very cool to finally have physical copies :)
Very cool to see this 😁☘️
A very lucky find been sitting in someone’s garage storage for 20 years apparently.
I threw one of these out into a skip in 1999, fully working :-( such a moron.
It probably made sense at the time I have thrown away a couple of computers in the past that I regretted later. There have been a few surfacing later, found in storage when renovating like this one.
😮 beautiful discovery ! The 1983 made me feel old though 😅
Yes all the cool systems came out in the 80’s!
That tape loading audio was amazing
I was totally not expecting that a very cool feature.
Love the CreatiVision. Here in SA known as the Telefunken Creativision.
Cool it seemed to reach more places than I knew. I remember your video on the composite mod, I am going to do the 2nd one that taps onto the points going into the RF modulator.
@@electricadventures Great. Should improve that picture quality. Cheers
I bought MD Darius on PS5. Gotta say it's great to finally have a single screen Darius for once that doesn't look like I'm playing it on a telescope.
It plays really well, very much a fan of the Darius series of shooters and nice to have this version in a physical cartridge.
Got to be the coolest demo tape I've seen!
They really put a lot of effort in, I need to play with the computer side of this system some more.
Dick sure went to a lot of trouble getting that demo together :) I'm not sure my commodore game with a demo like that! It almost seems as if that tape has been played to the same bit too often for its own good.
That tape seems quite impressive but most Dick Smith items were designed for ease of use ie they didn’t just import them they made localisation changes and added extra documentation to all their systems. I would say that tape has been left in the system for a while.
I've heard about the dick smith wizzard before. It must have sold pretty well in Australia. It doesn't look like it's a copy of an existing system. Did Dick have the system made especially to his specs? The demo is very creatively done :)
They did a lot of work with partners in Hong Kong for all of their systems. They sold the successor computer only system the Laser 2001 after this as well.
The tape trick is very smart indeed... it would've saved us listening to the awful screeching of the Speccy. Nice machine!
I did not realise it did that but I haven’t really played with the computer part of it much before. Have to try it out some more in part II :)
@@electricadventures I'm sure it doesn't work on the speccy as most data recorders have a mono tapehead
Yeah most 8-bit tape players only have a single cable for the in signal.
Playing audio and loading data from the same tape is a neat trick
I did not realise it did that, have played it as a console but not much looked at its computer capabilities before.
My favourite game (my high score just under 20k). Looks like it has an updated joystick. The original joystick looked like a club and was rubbish where the contacts would fail at the worst possible time.
Yes it has had the upgrade kit that was supplied after the joysticks broke too easily and the updated rom with the difficulty adjusted. I would still like to install the Berzerk/Frenzy multi-board just haven’t been able to get hold of one so far.
My mom and her brother had one of these, I am trying to find the cables for it so we can test if it works.
My favourite computer (of course) hopefully you can find the power supply the video hookups are fairly standard ones
@@electricadventures Yeah, hopefully the power supply cable is in the same box as the msx, i have loads of the video cables
excellent video!!! Are these files you use in this video available for purchase or something? I'm having trouble finding the correct files
The main place to go is the GitHub page or the thread on Atariage. I’ll check which links I added to the video description a bit later.
I just checked and both links are there in the description the GitHub one would be your best bet.
This console read backups cd ps1 and saturn?
It will read CD backups but they have to be PC Engine titles.
I love the cover, that is for sure!
It is a classic for sure ;)
Congratulations on the book. I've been waiting for something like this for a while.
Thank you, I hope it assists with your NES programming journey.
What an epic accomplishment!
Thank you
Congratulations Tony !! I'm currently struggling with collision detection in a simple platformer in my beloved C64 between the main sprite and the platforms 😅 but I will work it out. I'm sure your next book will be for the C64 😂😂😂 and you'll sell me a signed copy 👍
Yeah translating sprite coordinates and size to a matching area in your background graphics requires a fair bit of effort on 8-bit systems. C64 is on my list of systems to cover, so never say never :)
My copy should arrive from amazon monday morning ! I am looking foward to it.. i never programed 6502 so it will be a neat experiance the nes is a iconic machine. Now can we please get a reprint on your Coleco programming book ! -MrDave6309
Ah good to know it is finally available on Amazon as well (much better postage rates for those outside the USA). I am working on a revised edition of the Coleco book and it will be available as a print book directly from Amazon.
Lovely stuff!
Thank you, great to finally have physical copies :)
F1 Pole Position was a banger of a game. I loved that you could swap the drivers between teams and, if you won the championship, you'd unlock swapping engines as well.
I really need to have another go at this, really enjoy racing games and especially with proper driving controls.
I use a scsi zip drive to move files. Linux picks then up fine , windows needs 33 meg partitions.
I actually have a couple of Zip drives I should dig them out and give them a try.
Did they ever release a mini 2 in Australia
I didn’t see one advertised or in store anywhere. There was stock of this one available for a while though.
